The first cut is usually the hardest, next to deciding what plan to buy. In this case, it's a Glen-L Zip. The hull shape fitted my intention to build a general purpose utility boat: for messing about, fishing, hauling camping stuff. From the start I had no intention of finishing it as a classic-style wooden "runabout" as called for in the plans. I wanted an open cockpit with room to move around and stowage under the foredeck. Didn't have the big bucks for a big outboard either--the Zip hull looked easily-driven with enough vee up front to lessen the pounding if the waves got bigger.
